The European Commission makes available online Internews Europe recently completed study on the ICT sector in former Soviet countries. In 2004-2006 Internews Europe as a partner of Political Intelligence (Belgium) implemented the project-monitoring of Telecommunications and the Information Society in eight ex-Soviet countries.
Faced with the structural and economic factors, Russia, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Kazakhstan and Moldova being studied. The ICT sector has been the focus of a significant degree of bilateral and multilateral cooperation (with the EU, World Bank, UNDP), as it is seen as offering great potential for economic growth, underpinning democracy, creating wealth.
The study aims to give an overview of the development of telecommunications and the information society in eight countries. The project is not simply an information gathering exercise. It also aims the establishment of better communication between industry sectors and between regulators in the former Soviet countries.
In the result the final monitoring-report has been published at the European Commission website.
